Division of Wildlife Research, CSIRO, P.O. Box 84, Lyneham, A.C.T. 2602, Australia. Abstract: In Australia, eucalypt forests are the major vegetation form. They are highly fireprone, but also the major repository of the vertebrate fauna. Recent studies have demonstrated that the fauna, like the flora, may be adapted to fire. Simple divisions of environments into habitats satisfactorily predicted the abundance and diversity of small mammals. The habitat preferences of four species of small mammal were examined in relation to various components of the habitat using principal component analysis. The environmental components scored were the abundance of litter, brush and boulders, of ground vegetation, and of shrubs, and of trees and their canopies. The patterns which emerged are examined for projected effects of fires of high or low intensity upon the habitat components and hence upon the small mammal fauna.

Influence of Fire Mosaics, Habitat Characteristics and Cattle Disturbance on Mammals in Fire-Prone Savanna Landscapes of the Northern Kimberley
Patch mosaic burning, in which fire is used to produce a mosaic of habitat patches representative of a range of fire histories ('pyrodiversity'), has been widely advocated to promote greater biodiversity. However, the details of desired fire mosaics for prescribed burning programs are often unspecified. Threatened small to medium-sized mammals (35 g to 5.5 kg) in the fire-prone tropical savanna...
متن کاملLandscape Management of Fire and Grazing Regimes Alters the Fine-Scale Habitat Utilisation by Feral Cats
Intensification of fires and grazing by large herbivores has caused population declines in small vertebrates in many ecosystems worldwide. Impacts are rarely direct, and usually appear driven via indirect pathways, such as changes to predator-prey dynamics. Fire events and grazing may improve habitat and/or hunting success for the predators of small mammals, however, such impacts have not been ...
متن کاملFire impacts recruitment more than survival of small-mammals in a tropical savanna
The frequency and spatial patterning of fire for optimal biodiversity conservation is often poorly understood by managers, in part due to a lack of understanding of the mechanisms responsible for altering population dynamics of individual species. We investigated changes in the vital rates (survival and recruitment) of four small mammal species (three marsupials and one rodent) in a tropical sa...
متن کاملCanopy Closure and Emigration by Juvenile Gopher Frogs
Although studies have addressed effects of abrupt transitions in habitat type (e.g., forest–clear-cut or forest–field edges) on amphibian movements, little is known about effects of more subtle habitat transitions on patterns of migration and habitat use in amphibians. We used radiotelemetry to study movement patterns of juvenile gopher frogs (Rana capito) emigrating from ponds that were surrou...

CSIRO Division of Plant Industry, P.O. Box 1600, Canberra City, A.C.T. 2601, Australia. Abstract: Southeastern and southwestern Australia have quasiand classical-Mediterranean climates respectively. Vegetation varies widely from forests to woodlands to shrublands. Attitudes to landscape have been important in allocating land use in these areas with a general contrast between what is "practical"...
